ALIT follow-up after Q1: contracted revenue under contract grew YoY despite the market focusing on the EBITDA miss

Key insights

  • An analyst follow-up on Alight (ALIT) after Q1 earnings suggests a weakening of the bear thesis. Recurring revenue under contract grew YoY, indicating stabilization and contradicting the narrative of accelerating client erosion. While EBITDA missed expectations, FCF remained positive, and guidance was maintained. The analyst notes unresolved issues like the lack of a permanent CFO and NYSE compliance, but views the setup as dependent on continued stabilization in subsequent quarters.
ALIT follow-up after Q1: contracted revenue under contract grew YoY despite the market focusing on the EBITDA miss

Disclosure: Long ALIT. Not investment advice.

Four weeks ago I posted a thesis arguing that ALIT’s $3.1B GAAP loss was largely a non-cash accounting event masking a cash-generative business, and that May earnings would determine whether the thesis survived.

Q1 did not “confirm” the thesis, but it materially weakened the terminal-decline narrative.

The most important datapoint from the earnings call received almost no attention:

  • recurring revenue under contract at the start of Q1 2026 was >$2.0B * same figure at the start of Q1 2025 was $1.97B

The contracted revenue floor actually grew YoY.

That matters because the core bear thesis rests on accelerating retention deterioration. This does not disprove that thesis, but it is inconsistent with catastrophic client erosion.

Other notable points:

  • $53M FCF despite $136M TRA payment in Q1 * liquidity >$500M * 2027 TRA estimate remains unchanged despite the current dispute * guidance maintained * no kill criteria triggered from the original thesis

Still unresolved:

  • management stopped reporting GRR * permanent CFO not hired yet * NYSE compliance still pending

The setup now depends on whether subsequent quarters continue validating stabilization.
