Alibaba integrates Qwen AI to drive voice-based shopping on Taobao

Investing.com -- Alibaba Group is preparing to launch a deep integration between its large language model, Qwen, and its primary online marketplace, Taobao.

According to a report from Reuters, this strategic move aims to transition the consumer experience from traditional keyword-based searches to a conversational, AI-driven shopping model.

The integration will allow users to browse, compare, and finalize purchases directly through the Qwen app by interacting with an artificial intelligence agent rather than manually clicking through product listings.

The Qwen application will be granted full access to the comprehensive Taobao and Tmall catalog, which currently hosts over 4 billion products.

To support this scale, Alibaba has developed a "skills library" designed to automate complex tasks, including logistics management and after-sales service inquiries.

The AI system is also expected to leverage historical order data and individual user preferences to generate personalized product recommendations within the chat interface.

Within the Taobao app itself, the company plans to debut a Qwen-powered assistant featuring advanced tools such as virtual try-ons and automated 30-day price tracking.

Alibaba’s aggressive push into integrated AI highlights a diverging path between Chinese and Western e-commerce strategies.

In China, the model favors embedding artificial intelligence directly into the transaction layer for a seamless user experience. Conversely, Western platforms remain more fragmented.

Amazon has utilized machine learning to refine its internal search results, but has shown caution regarding full autonomous purchasing. Meanwhile, Shopify has opted to support external AI agents rather than developing its own integrated consumer-facing platform.

The latest development follows a broader trend of Chinese technology firms shoring up their internal ecosystems to maintain market dominance.

By merging its advanced generative AI capabilities with its massive retail footprint, Alibaba seeks to capture a larger share of the shifting digital retail landscape.

The rollout of the conversational shopping tools is expected to set a new benchmark for how domestic competitors, such as PDD Holdings and JD.com, approach the intersection of social commerce and artificial intelligence in the coming year.
