  • Cox Automotive forecasts weaker auto sales in 2026 due to high gas prices and interest rates, potentially benefiting EV and hybrid demand as consumers seek lower monthly payments and fuel costs. Overall auto sales are projected to decline, with a significant drop compared to previous years. This shift could negatively impact traditional auto manufacturers while providing a modest boost to EV makers.
Auto demand seems strained. Could EVs make a comeback?

Cox Automotive anticipates slower 2026 auto sales due to pressures from gas (RB=F) prices and interest rates.

Yahoo Finance Senior Autos Reporter Pras Subramanian outlines the details, highlighting how the macroeconomic landscape benefits the electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids.

You know, the Cox Cox had their their their preview here for Q1 of 2026 and uh there's a couple of things going on. Uh mostly not good, right? So on on on the first the first group of factors is consumer sentiment and gas prices, right?

As gas prices go up, sentiment goes down. So that's something that's that's kind of weighing on the consumer. Uh, supply chain risk risks from upstream impacts, right, affecting the sector, higher energy costs, supply chain stuff, all going to raise prices for cars, right?

Uh so then consumers, what do they do? look to adjust monthly spending. How are they going to do that? Lower monthly payment on cars, they're going to drive less, work from home more, that sort of thing. Again, not good for for the for the auto industry and then they're going to probably pivot to potentially looking at EVs and hybrids. That's one option that they can do, right?

Oh EV gets a little bit of a lift? Is that part of the theory possibly?

Potentially potentially, yeah.

In other words, what I, who needs this $4 gas? What do I need this for? I want an EV now.

Exactly. Even if I don't have the federal tax subsidy.

Right. and we've talked about how much more per dollar of gas it increases your costs per year. But anyway, back to that number you mentioned, that 15.8 million uh SAR, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of car sales, uh down 2.6%, uh last year, uh I'm sorry, down 2.6% quarter over quarter, down 6% from a year ago, right?

That's that's that's a pretty big number. We used to have 17, 18 million SAR uh uh readings back in in March of last year, 2021 in during the pandemic. So, basically what's happening here's high gas prices, high cost for cars, inflation, tariffs, all these things are happening. None of them are good for a car the car industry.

How how are hybrids doing by the way? Any line of sight?

Hybrids are doing pretty well. I mean, overall a lot of auto makers talking about how that there's a demand.

They always do well. We always say that.

They I mean, I think what's what's happened was that the base is kind of low. And now people are piling on it. That's why you see the numbers every month up, up, up, up, up. And people see that, hey, I don't even need a plug-in hybrid. a mild hybrid, just some regular one gets you good gas mileage. at this this day and age, you know, every dollar gas for a 20 gallon tank. I mean, we did the math. So, so that's that's sort of the big deal why hybrids are preferred right now.

And I think that, you know, the Cox people will say, yeah, that's that's a good thing, but not every car is a hybrid, right? So that's where we're

What what what are the popular hybrids by the way?

You know, you you have the you have the king, right? You have you have the Prius, right? That was the original hybrid. But we but I think the major hybrids are like some stuff like the like the the Toyota Rav 4. You have a lot of uh a lot of Hyundai and Kia vehicles have hybrids. Um, those are popular vehicles. The Ford Maverick pickup is a hybrid, very That's Ford's top-selling hybrid. So, you start putting that power train in a very popular body styles, that's what that's what it can take off.
