Key insights

  • The analysis suggests Magnite (MGNI) is a potentially attractive stock due to its high revenue growth and free cash flow margin. Zoom (ZM) is viewed with caution due to slowing growth and low net revenue retention. VF Corp (VFC) raises concerns due to low operating and free cash flow margins, weak revenue growth, and declining returns on capital. Overall, the piece highlights that sustainable growth alongside profitability is key, implying a slightly bearish outlook for companies prioritizing short-term profits over long-term growth.
1 profitable stock to watch and 2 to question this week

Saw an interesting breakdown of three profitable companies, and it’s a good reminder that profitability alone doesn’t always mean a stock is a buy.

Let’s start with Magnite (MGNI). The company has been growing revenue at around 26.4% annually over the past 5 years, which is strong for an ad-tech name. What stands out even more is its 27.1% free cash flow margin, which gives it flexibility to reinvest or return capital. Operating margin sits around 13.7%, so it’s not just growth, it’s profitable growth.

On the other side, Zoom (ZM) looks solid on the surface with a 23.1% operating margin, but growth is slowing. Billings growth was only 4% last year, and forward expectations are around 4.2%, which is pretty low for a tech company. Add in a 98% net revenue retention rate, which suggests limited expansion from existing customers, and the story starts to look less exciting.

Then there’s VF Corp (VFC). The company is profitable, but the numbers raise some concerns. Operating margin is only 4.8%, and free cash flow margin is around 4.4%, which limits flexibility. Revenue growth has been weak, and returns on capital are declining, which can be a red flag for long-term performance.

The takeaway for me is that not all profits are equal. Some companies are growing into their profitability, while others might be peaking or stagnating.

Do you focus more on profitability or growth when picking stocks, and which one matters more to you right now in this market?
