Key insights

  • Morgan Stanley upgraded Inditex to "overweight," citing Q1 outperformance against peers like H&M and Primark, despite a weakening European consumer. The upgrade suggests Inditex's resilient growth algorithm and margin expansion potential could offer a relative safe haven in the apparel sector. This could indirectly benefit US-listed apparel retailers by highlighting strong operational execution as a key differentiator, potentially leading to a broader sector re-evaluation.
Morgan Stanley lifts Inditex to “overweight” on Q1 peer outperformance

Investing.com -- Morgan Stanley upgraded Inditex to “overweight” from “equal-weight” on Friday, raising its price target to €62 from €52.50, implying 15% upside from the June 4 closing price of €54.06, as the Spanish fashion retailer’s first-quarter results demonstrated top-line resilience against a weakening European consumer backdrop.

The upgrade follows Inditex’s Q1 results, which posted high-single-digit constant-currency growth despite headwinds from the Middle East conflict, its knock-on effects on European consumer sentiment, and unfavourable weather.

That performance stood in contrast to peers including Primark, H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hugo Boss, Pandora, and PVH, which flagged softening European demand in recent weeks, according to the Morgan Stanley report.

"The growth algorithm for the group hasn’t changed," Inditex’s CFO said this week, reiterating long-term like-for-like growth targets of 4-6%, with space contribution adding an estimated 200 basis points on top.

Morgan Stanley modelled approximately 8% average constant-currency growth over the next three years, including 8% in fiscal 2026.

For Q2 covering May through July, the bank forecast 9.3% constant-currency growth, a slowdown from the 11.5% recorded in the first four weeks of the quarter, which was boosted by calendar effects.

Second-half growth was modelled at 7% constant-currency, below first-half’s 9%, reflecting a tougher comparison base.

On margins, Q1 gross margin expanded 70 basis points year-on-year. The company reiterated 2026 gross margin guidance of stable, plus or minus 50 basis points.

Morgan Stanley’s 2026 forecast sits at 58.5%, up 20 basis points year-on-year, with gradual annual EBIT margin expansion of approximately 30 basis points over the next three years.

Morgan Stanley’s updated estimates show fiscal 2027 net sales of €46.14 billion and EBIT of €9.59 billion, running roughly 1-2% ahead of consensus. The broker’s fiscal 2026 diluted EPS estimate stands at €2.18, in line with consensus.

The revised €62 price target, based on a blended DCF and price-to-earnings multiple analysis, applies a 26 times multiple on fiscal 2027 earnings, a premium to the company’s historical 24 times average.

The WACC was lowered to 8.5% from 9%, reflecting a reduced beta. The bank also revised its bull case to €75 from €65.50 and bear case to €45 from €40.50.

Morgan Stanley also flagged that artificial intelligence "is increasingly embedded across the Group’s operations, supporting our teams and enhancing the customer experience," in Inditex’s own words this week, which the bank views as a further differentiator versus peers.

Key downside risks cited include a sharper-than-expected growth slowdown, higher freight and product costs, and rising depreciation and amortisation from recent capital expenditure.
