  • The ADP report showed private employment growth accelerated in April, albeit slightly below expectations. Strength in healthcare and a rebound in trade, transportation, and utilities drove the increase. While large and small businesses are hiring, mid-sized firms show softness. This report offers an early signal ahead of the official nonfarm payrolls, suggesting a potentially resilient labor market, but its impact is tempered by the slightly weaker-than-expected headline figure.

Investing.com - U.S. private employers added jobs at the fastest pace since the beginning of 2025 in April, as companies navigated a resilient, albeit uncertain, economic backdrop.

Private employment grew by 109,000 roles last month, compared to a downwardly revised mark of 61,000 in March. Economists had anticipated a reading of 118,000.

The ADP report, which is compiled in collaboration with Stanford Digital Economy Lab, offers an initial glimpse of the American labor market before the release of the Labor Department’s more comprehensive nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.

Strength in the health care industry has continued to buttress the labor market during a time when the impact of the Iran war on inflation and growth remains unclear. The repercussions of sweeping U.S. trade policies has also been made murky following a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year declaring most of the levies illegal, with firms not sure if or when refunds from the decision will be doled out.

In a statement, ADP said a rebound in trade, transportation and utilities contributed to an acceleration in hiring last month as well.

"Small and large employers are hiring, but we’re seeing softness in the middle. Large companies have resources to deploy, and small ones are the most nimble, both important advantages in a complex labor environment," said Nela Richardson, Chief Economist at ADP.
