Jeremy Strong becomes Mark Zuckerberg in 'Social Network' sequel

Yahoo Finance Senior Reporters Ines Ferré and Brooke DiPalma come on Market Domination to eye some of Wednesday's top headlines, including movie lovers' first look at Jeremy Strong's — best known for HBO's corporate drama "Succession" — portrayal of Meta Platforms (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Reckoning."

The film is a direct sequel to Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Network."

These guys are counting on the next round of congressional testimony to make you likable, Mark.

I'm happy to lend a hand, but I think you're doomed.

This company and that guy, they're playing an unprecedented role in our lives.

The firehose of bad information you are injecting into the air supply is becoming jet powered.

I'm a free speech absolutist. I'm not the one who's lying and I'm not stopping them from seeing someone who is.

That free speech absolutist is Mark Zuckerberg who is being portrayed there by Jeremy Strong in the upcoming film, The Social Reckoning, which is a follow up to the movie, The Social Network. Let's bring in our Yahoo Finance's Brooke DiPalma and Enez Frey to dive into this as part of today's trending stories. Right, Brooke? So there was Jeremy Strong playing Zuck. Did you believe him? Did he sound and feel like Zuck? Did you buy it?

I don't, I'll be honest, I I feel like a lot of people in the office are saying that they do think that it sounds exactly like him, looks exactly like him. And as is nodding, I don't, I don't think so, but I feel like he's-

So you're not selling it?

I think that he's so hard, Mark Zuckerberg to replicate that I think he's pretty close.

I think it's a strong take

Yeah.

on Zuckerberg.

Yeah, strong take. I like that. He's very loud, very...

I I thought he was, he was pretty spot on his.

I well I thought it's interesting because Jesse Eisenberg had this more sort of like in that movie it was kind of a little bit more hoodie, awkward thing they were doing. This seems more-

But that was that was the what the time was. The Social Network, he was in college.

That that's exactly right. So I think Jeremy Strong here is doing like, he's the new, like, he's cooler. He he's the Dragon Slayer Zuck. That's what he's that's what he's trying to portray.

He stepped into his own in this movie.

Yeah, well, and it's also really a movie about how Facebook, uh, sort of stepped into its own and this the power of social media and the power that it's had on uh, people. So, I think that that kind of again, to this strong theme from a strong actor.

But but it almost seems like he's very intimidating, almost like scary within that. At least the trailer, the take that I get. But I feel like when Mark was testifying for this case a few years ago, it wasn't like I was like, hoh, you know, holding my seat. I think that it was just more of a strong presence.

Yeah. to each their own. Yeah. His, I I think that when he has testified in the past, he's been a lot more-

Intense.

Yeah. I think he's trying to bring a certain intensity now. This is like a different thing. We can't just do Eisenberg all over again.

What do you what do you think that Mark thinks of it?

I think Mark loves it. I think he's, oh, totally. Don't you think so? He's still in, he's still in the conversation.

I don't think he loves it.

I don't think they love this attention. I mean.

You don't? I think you don't think Zuck likes being portrayed on the big screen?

I mean, maybe in that aspect, but I don't think the attention of all the whistleblower and all the files. I don't think that that type of attention.

And and this kind of was put to close. It was kind of put to bed. I mean, obviously, everyone's sort of critical of social media and and that of nature. But this whistleblower case seems like it was years ago and now it's brought being brought back up. So that's definitely not to the likes of Meta's PR. But at the same exact time, also you do have Apple now coming out with this this week about how exactly they're limiting screen time and the actions that they're taking. So, kind of seems like, okay, are are we back in this cycle of social media being criticized again?

I mean, it is an important topic that is that has been for years now. And as you mentioned, these files back or these testimonies back in 2021, but it really takes a couple of years to make a movie anyway. So they started, I'm sure, shortly after. And it is a topic that is being talked about a lot in schools and and among parents.

Can I just say, I was at, I was in my mom's hometown, my hometown recently and I feel like there's a lot more kids riding around the block.

Is that crazy of me? I don't know, maybe it has to do with this film, this criticism.

You mean your kid spending a lot more time riding around the block?

I'm certainly putting her everywhere that I can. And it's because of that um that Times article or that Times author, his book was number one in the New York Times. I can't remember the guy's name, but it basically talks about you need to get your kids outside.

Yeah, like a lot more kids riding on bikes. I'm like, this feels, this feels good, guys.
