Clarivate Plc (CLVT) announced the launch of its AI50 benchmark, identifying 50 organizations that demonstrate leadership in artificial intelligence inventions based on patent data analysis.
The ranking includes companies such as NVIDIA, Micron Technology, Alphabet, Qualcomm, and Foxconn. More than half of the AI50 organizations also appear in Clarivate’s 2026 Top 100 Global Innovators list.
Geographic concentration shows that 80% of the organizations are headquartered in four regions: Mainland China with 15 organizations, the United States with 14, South Korea with 6, and Japan with 6. Government and academic research institutions represent a significant portion of the list, followed by companies in software and media, electronics and computing equipment, and semiconductors sectors.
The analysis uses Clarivate’s proprietary Derwent Strength Index, which measures invention influence and investment based on global patent data. Organizations are ranked by the number of high-strength AI inventions they own, focusing on patents with multinational protection.
"The AI50 are leading the way as the world economy is reshaping," said Maroun S. Mourad, President of Intellectual Property at Clarivate. "They generate a disproportionately high share of the world’s high-strength AI inventions."
The report identifies that cross-border collaboration is higher among AI50 organizations, with approximately 10% of inventions involving academic partners compared to 7% globally, and 20% involving international inventor teams versus 7% globally.
The methodology selects the top 0.5% of AI inventions from the Derwent World Patents Index, requiring patent family members in at least two countries. This year’s list includes 52 organizations due to a tie at the inclusion boundary.
