UK mining stocks rise as copper hits new high

Investing.com -- UK mining stocks powered higher on Wednesday, with copper futures touching a fresh all-time high of $14,191 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange as supply disruptions and resilient Chinese demand drove broad-based gains across the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250.

Among blue-chips, Antofagasta rose 3.67%, while Anglo American gained 3.49%, Rio Tinto climbed 3% and Glencore added 1.8%.

On the FTSE 250, Atalaya Mining Copper was the standout performer, rising 3.78% ahead of earnings results expected in 13 days, while Hochschild Mining gained 1.79%.

Copper futures (MCU3) settled around $14,158 by mid-afternoon, having touched $14,191 intraday, a new record.

Ongoing Middle East tensions have disrupted sulphuric acid shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key input for copper refining, prompting China to ban its own exports of the chemical.

That has forced major Chilean refiners to cut output at a time when the Grasberg mine in Indonesia, the world’s second largest copper operation, remains in a phased recovery following a fatal incident last September, with full restoration not expected until end-2027.

On the demand side, appetite from China’s industrial sector has remained firm, while structural tailwinds from AI data centres, electric vehicles and grid electrification continue to broaden the buyer base for the metal.

Precious metals miners also caught a bid, with Fresnillo and Endeavour Mining rising around 3.6%, despite gold edging down 0.25% to around $4,700 per ounce and silver holding near two-month highs above $86 an ounce with only marginal movement on the day.
