I've been following Auto China 2026 coverage all weekend and honestly it's hard to overstate the scale of what's happening in Beijing right now. The show runs April 24 through May 3 across two venues totaling 380,000 square meters of floor space. For context, CES uses about 250,000 sqm. There are 1,451 vehicles on display, 181 of them world premieres, spread across 17 halls. More than 2,000 companies from 21 countries showed up. It's now the largest auto show on the planet and it's not particularly close.
The thing that stands out most to me isn't any single car though. It's the charging story. BYD unveiled its second gen Blade Battery back on March 5 and the Beijing show is the first time we're seeing it in multiple production models. The numbers sound fake if you're used to Western charging speeds: 10% to 70% in five minutes, 10% to 97% in nine minutes. Before anyone calls it a lab stunt, those figures need BYD's own 1,500 kW flash charging stations, and they already have over 4,200 of them running in China with plans to hit 20,000 by year end. Even on regular public chargers, BYD says the new battery charges 30 to 50 percent faster than conventional EV packs. The Denza Z9GT with this battery posted 1,036 km on a single charge under CLTC testing. Yeah CLTC is generous compared to EPA, but even if you chop 30 to 40 percent off that's still north of 600 miles real world. Out of Spec Reviews actually flew to China to verify the flash charging claims themselves and said the numbers check out.
XPeng brought the GX, a full size six seater SUV starting at roughly $58,000. The autonomous hardware on this thing is wild. Four proprietary Turing AI chips putting out 3,000 TOPS of compute, a steer by wire system built with Bosch, and six layers of redundancy covering steering, braking, power, drive, communication, and unlocking. XPeng is calling it the first factory integrated robotaxi prototype built for mass production. Whether L4 autonomy actually gets regulatory approval anytime soon is a whole different conversation, but the hardware ceiling at $58k is kind of insane.
BYD also showed the Denza Z, a 1,000+ hp convertible electric hypercar heading to Europe. Huawei had its Maextro luxury sedan behind velvet ropes like a museum piece, going straight at Rolls Royce and Maybach. Volkswagen said it's launching 20 smart EVs in China this year with plans for 50 by 2030, all developed locally. And Tesla has now skipped three consecutive Beijing auto shows. Make of that what you will.
What really gets me is how the competition has moved past "who can build an EV" to "who can build the whole ecosystem." BYD doesn't just make the car and the battery. They're building the charging network, the energy storage, and putting flash charging in everything from a $22,000 compact to a six figure hypercar in the same quarter. CATL is powering 900 ships. XPeng showed up with humanoid robots and a flying car prototype next to their SUV. The vertical integration across Chinese EV supply chains, from cell chemistry to charging infrastructure to autonomous driving chips, is just not something any single Western automaker is doing at this scale right now. I've been looking at how to get exposure to this whole stack and most China tech ETFs like KWEB only cover internet names. CNQQ is one of the few I've found that actually holds CATL, BYD, and Xiaomi alongside the usual software giants, which makes more sense to me if you think the real story in China tech right now is hardware and manufacturing, not just apps.
