Merz says Europe backs strong NATO, shares US goal of ending Iran war

Investing.com-- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday that Europe remained committed to a strong NATO alliance and shared Washington’s objective of ending the war with Iran and preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, despite growing strains between the U.S. and European allies.

"We know that there are some differences. We know that we are seeing challenges, all of us, but our final goal is to bring this conflict to an end and to guarantee that Iran is not able to produce nuclear weapons,” Merz said.

European allies expect U.S. President Donald Trump to announce further troop withdrawals from Europe, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Merz said the key issue for NATO was maintaining “unity of purpose” and stressed Europe remained highly interested in continued U.S. military support.

He also said Sweden and Finland had strengthened NATO’s European pillar as European governments accelerate defence spending amid what Merz described as a growing threat from Russia.
