We're all on reddit discussing investing, we all read Berkshire's annual letters, we all can recite the folksy wisdoms of Warren and Charlie, but investing is deeply personal. I often have an epiphany, "oh, that's what they meant", a sense of enlightenment, as if the age-old wisdoms suddenly dawned on me and becomes mine.
It often happens that two people invest in the same stock, one makes a ton, the other loses, not because of timing, but because of conviction. For example, I tried several times with FICO and Moody's over the years, each time intellectually convinced these are winning companies, yet each time I lost money. My conclusion is that these are great companies, but they are not my great companies, I simply don't have the conviction for them.
Social media made investing a competitive public sport, it shouldn't be. It's personal, like food, books, movies, love, etc.
