Yahoo Finance Senior Autos Reporter Pras Subramanian joins Josh Lipton on Market Domination to break down the new (GM) Chevrolet's redesigned Silverado and examine the mounting challenges facing the pickup truck market, from shifting consumer demand to affordability concerns and increased competition.
all new new generation next gen 2027 Silverado. This this is a big deal for the brand obviously because, you know, Ford says they're the number one selling F series, number one selling truck, right? But if you were to combine Silverado plus the Sierra the Sierra GMC Sierra, that would be the number one truck actually. But anyway, new truck here, uh new design, new interior with with digital cockpit, things like that, uh two big screens. But I think the biggest uh uh changes here are two new V8s uh that are going to power these uh these trucks. GM has been investing in VA technology that'll be built here in the United States. Uh as they listen to their customer that the customers want gas-powered V8 powered uh trucks. They're going to do that for them. Uh so they're going to get that. Now GM has some issues with their recent V8s with recall and some reliability issues. So this is kind of a prove it to me moment for the brand, but I think that's the right path for them as they kind of look to take on Ford. I mean, they've been taking on Ford for many years now in trucks, but this is their sort of their next bet on their volume half-ton pickup.
We got a price tag for this yet?
Not yet, but it's going to be right around what we what you would normally uh pay for a for for a Silverado right now. probably not much of a of a price hike. Uh because they know it's an extremely competitive uh market with not just F-150 but also the also RAM and also Toyota with the uh the Tundra.
Ford would say it's a lot let's talk about two things. It's a supply issue, right? So last year, end of last year we had that big Novelas fire at the aluminum plant in New York in New York, Upstate New York which which is producing a lot of the aluminum for F150 which is mostly aluminum, right? The exterior body panels. There was a second fire that then hit, right? So they were doubly impacted by that. Supply went down. But then there's also the affordability issue, right? These trucks are 70, 80, even $90,000 on some on some trim levels. So, there's an issue of are people even buying new trucks because they're so expensive? Combine that with hard sort of comparison to last year when people were gobbling up trucks because they were afraid of tariffs and things like that, right? So, uh there's a lot going on there in terms of why that number is so low.
