Key insights

  • The article discusses rule changes allowing companies like SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic to join Nasdaq indices like the QQQ shortly after IPO, bypassing typical waiting periods and profitability metrics. This is presented as a compromise to attract listings and to ensure indices accurately reflect market capitalization for mega-cap IPOs. The author notes that delaying inclusion could create significant rebalancing issues for passive index funds, impacting market stability. While the author doesn't explicitly state a bullish or bearish outlook, the discussion centers on structural index changes rather than direct market performance prediction.
Addressing yesterdays post - Help me understand "Elon and SpaceX are going to rob 401k"

This is really a great sub that I have gotten a lot of useful information. But anytime something has to do with a company owned by Elon it just gets blown up with a lot of hate because of Elon. And listen, that's fine if you hate the guy, no problems there. But it was a legit question that I too did not understand or agree with but it's important to know what is going on.

The question has to do with how the rules were changed to allow Space X to join QQQ shortly after IPO. Normally you have to wait a year and there are other metrics specifically profitability. That was all waived.

But it's important to note, this was not just done for Space X. Both Open AI and Anthropic are also going to take advantage of this rule change. So why are the rules being changed?

1, Specifically for Nasdaq, adding to QQQ was a compromise with Space X to get them to list on Nasdaq instead of the NYSE. Again, Open AI and Anthropic are likely to do the same for the same reason.

2, regardless of index inclusion, the reality is all 3 of these companies will likely IPO as $100 billion+ market cap companies. A normal IPO is not going to have this size of an impact, so the consideration for changing the rules is so that the indexes truly reflect the markets they are supposed to represent.

3, this is the big one. If these companies are not included, and then they have to be added after meeting the parameters for other companies (12 months old), it could create a real problem for the passive indexes. Normally when the S&P 500 adds a company it is going to make up well under 1% of the total index. Vanguard, Schwab, and the other passive funds have to buy these stocks but it's not that impactful. If they wait and buy Space X once it's grow to a size that might represent 5% of the index, that could cause major, major problems with the amount they will have to buy and also the good companies they will have to sell to balance.

Again, I'm not saying I agree with the Space X inclusion. In my gut, I really don't like it. But when you consider all of this, especially that last point about the risk of waiting a year when the companies are humongous, it does make sense to include them in the index earlier than was traditioanlly done.
