Ukrainian drones strike commercial ship and chemical hubs in Southern Russia

Investing.com -- A wave of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes targeted critical industrial and maritime infrastructure across southern Russia on Saturday, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries.

According to regional authorities, the attacks successfully penetrated air defenses in the Rostov and Samara regions, striking a foreign-flagged commercial vessel in the Sea of Azov and sparking significant fires at major chemical production facilities.

In the port city of Taganrog, Governor Yuri Slyusar confirmed that a missile strike caused extensive damage to commercial infrastructure, specifically targeting the warehouse of a logistics company. The ensuing blaze required an emergency evacuation of the surrounding area.

Further offshore, a Ukrainian drone strike hit a dry cargo ship several kilometers from the coastline in the Sea of Azov. The attack sparked a fire aboard the vessel, raising fresh concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping lanes in the region.

The casualties in the Rostov region include one individual killed and four others seriously injured, with medical officials describing three of the wounded, including one foreign national, as being in critical condition.

Targeting Taganrog and the Sea of Azov represents a direct threat to the regional logistics hubs that facilitate the export of Russian grain and industrial materials.

Simultaneously, the industrial hub of Togliatti in the Samara region faced a large-scale drone assault. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed that at least one industrial employee sustained shrapnel wounds and reported a drone strike on a residential high-rise.

Official statements remained vague on specific industrial targets, but open-source intelligence and eyewitness footage indicated large fires near two of Russia’s most prominent chemical enterprises: Tolyattikauchuk and KuibyshevAzot.

Tolyattikauchuk is a vital producer of synthetic rubber used in the tire and automotive industries, while KuibyshevAzot is a leading manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers and chemical feedstocks.

Ukraine’s attacks follow previous attempts to disrupt the TogliattiAzot facility, suggesting a deliberate strategy by Kyiv to degrade Russia’s high-value chemical and fertilizer production capacity.

The disruption forced a temporary suspension of operations at the nearby Samara airport, further impacting regional transit.
