Can Agentic AI become the internet’s next gateway?

Investing.com -- Google is well-positioned to benefit from the rise of agentic artificial intelligence as AI systems increasingly handle shopping, bookings, and other online transactions, according to a Bank of America Securities report.

The bank said the internet is evolving beyond traditional search toward AI-powered assistants capable of evaluating options, making decisions, and completing tasks on behalf of users.

Google has expanded its AI offerings through products including AI Mode, Universal Cart, Search Agents, and commerce-focused advertising tools.

According to the report, AI Mode has reached about 1 billion monthly users, while AI Overviews serve roughly 2.5 billion monthly users. The company has also rolled out features designed to integrate product discovery and purchasing directly into AI-generated search results.

BofA highlighted Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, a framework intended to connect AI assistants with merchants, retailers, and payment providers.

Participants include Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe. The framework is designed to allow AI agents to compare products, verify inventory, and complete purchases for users.

The report said competition in the agentic AI space is intensifying as companies race to develop transaction-enabled AI platforms.

Among Google’s rivals, OpenAI has expanded its efforts through ChatGPT, which the report said has nearly 1 billion weekly active users. OpenAI is also developing commerce-related capabilities through its Operator agent and Agentic Commerce Protocol.

BofA said other technology companies, including Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Anthropic, are investing heavily in agentic AI products and infrastructure.

The report added that e-commerce, travel, and delivery companies are also building their own AI-powered tools as they seek to maintain direct customer relationships.

Companies cited include Amazon, Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG), Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE), DoorDash (NASDAQ:DASH), and Instacart.

BofA said the growing adoption of agentic AI is expected to reshape online commerce as technology firms, retailers, and service providers expand investments in AI-driven transaction platforms.
