Earnings call transcript: GE HealthCare tops Q3 2026 with margin gains

GE HealthCare posted stronger-than-expected third-quarter 2026 results, with revenue of $5.5 billion, organic growth of 6.2%, and adjusted earnings per share of $1.34, up 25.1% from a year earlier. The company also lifted its full-year outlook, citing margin expansion, improving cash flow and a record backlog of $23.7 billion. Shares rose 5.71% to $75.17 in recent trading, up from a previous close of $71.11.

GE HealthCare said the quarter reflected broad-based strength across its businesses, with particular momentum in advanced imaging, pharmaceutical diagnostics and patient care solutions. The company said demand remained healthy in capital equipment markets, while service revenue and product shipments both contributed to growth.

The results also showed the company’s operating model improving. Management pointed to better productivity, lower tariff costs than a year ago and stronger execution in supply chain and manufacturing. Those gains helped drive a sharp rise in profitability.

The quarter also extended a recent pattern of improvement. GE HealthCare has been emphasizing commercial execution, cost control and new product launches as it works to expand margins while maintaining mid-single-digit growth over time.

According to InvestingPro data, the company has raised its dividend for 4 consecutive years, demonstrating consistent commitment to shareholder returns. With a market cap of $34.35 billion and a P/E ratio of 16.38, the stock currently trades below InvestingPro’s Fair Value, suggesting potential upside for investors. The platform’s analysis indicates GEHC is undervalued compared to its intrinsic worth.

GE HealthCare did not provide a consensus benchmark in the materials reviewed, so a formal beat-or-miss calculation versus Wall Street estimates is not available here. Still, the company described the quarter as ahead of expectations, and the market’s reaction suggests investors viewed the report positively.

The most important signals were not just revenue and EPS growth, but the quality of the results. Margin expansion of 180 basis points and a 39% increase in free cash flow point to stronger operating performance. That kind of improvement often matters more to investors than a small earnings surprise, especially for a company already seen as a steady healthcare technology name.

Compared with recent quarters, the performance appears solid and consistent with a business that is improving execution while keeping growth intact. The record backlog also gives the company more visibility into future sales than many peers. InvestingPro’s Financial Health Score rates GEHC as "GOOD" with strong profitability metrics, including a return on equity of 19% over the last twelve months. GE HealthCare shares rose 5.71% to $75.17 after the update, compared with a previous close of $71.11. The stock now sits above the middle of its 52-week range of $58.75 to $89.77, but still below the high end.

The move suggests investors welcomed the combination of stronger margins, higher cash flow and raised guidance. The company also said demand remains healthy and that its sales funnel is strong, which likely helped ease concerns about slowing order growth. InvestingPro subscribers have access to 6 additional exclusive tips about GEHC, including insights on valuation and momentum indicators. The platform notes the stock’s RSI suggests overbought territory following the recent rally, though the shares remain below the Fair Value estimate, placing GEHC on the Most Undervalued watchlist.

No trading volume data was provided, so it is not possible to judge whether the move came with unusually heavy activity. Even so, a gain of nearly 6% is a notable one-day move for a large-cap healthcare company and points to a clear positive response.

GE HealthCare raised its full-year 2026 outlook. It now expects:

Management said fourth-quarter organic revenue growth should come in at 3% to 4%, with advanced imaging and pharmaceutical diagnostics expected to lead. Patient Care Solutions is expected to face a tougher comparison because the prior-year quarter benefited from a product hold release.

Looking further ahead, the company said it will provide detailed 2027 guidance in February. Management said it remains confident in mid-single-digit top-line growth over the medium term, with continued margin expansion supported by new products, pricing actions and productivity gains.

The company also highlighted several strategic priorities:

Peter Arduini, the company’s chief executive, said the company’s operating system is helping improve execution across the business. “Heartbeat is strengthening how we run the company and helping our teams deliver on commercial and operational simplification,” he said.

He also pointed to product innovation as a key growth driver. “We reached key regulatory milestones in the quarter on two imaging platforms with market-differentiating features,” Arduini said, referring to Photonova Spectra and StarGuide GX.

On the radiopharmaceutical opportunity, Arduini said, “The long-term opportunity is over 80% SPECT to PET,” underscoring the company’s view that the market can keep expanding as customers shift toward more advanced imaging.

Chief Financial Officer Bill Grogan said the company’s results reflected both growth and discipline. “We are pleased with our strong performance on both the top and bottom line, and with growth ahead of expectations,” he said.

Analysts focused on several themes during the call, including capital spending trends, order momentum, China recovery, tariffs and the outlook for 2027.

Questions about the capital equipment market centered on whether customers were pulling back. Management said imaging remains a top budget priority and that the sales funnel is “as strong as it’s ever been.” It also said there is no direct evidence of a procedure slowdown.

Analysts also asked about the lower book-to-bill ratio. Management said the figure reflected normal timing shifts in large deals rather than a weakening trend.

Another major topic was Flyrcado and the path to a $500 million revenue run rate. Management said adoption is broadening beyond existing PET users and that SOFIE Biosciences would strengthen supply reliability and distribution.

China was another focus. Management said the market is recovering quarter by quarter, with more tender activity and improving execution, though much of the reported growth came from foreign exchange.

Finally, analysts pressed for more detail on tariffs and 2027 margins. Management said it is planning for higher tariff scenarios and is using pricing, sourcing changes and productivity measures to offset the impact.

Peter Arduini, President and CEO, GE HealthCare: Thanks, Carolyn. Good morning and thank you for joining us today. Before I review highlights from the quarter, I want to take a moment to welcome Bill. He brings tremendous experience and a strong track record, and I am looking forward to partnering with him as we execute against our strategy and deliver on our priorities. Looking at our third quarter results on slide 3, we delivered strong top-line growth and margin expansion across all segments. Broad-based demand in Advanced Imaging Solutions and Pharmaceutical Diagnostics supported healthy orders, book-to-bill, and backlog. Heartbeat is strengthening how we run the company and helping our teams deliver on commercial and operational simplification. A great example of performance driven by Heartbeat this quarter is Patient Care Solutions. The team identified root causes of prior supply challenges and implemented standard work and daily management to drive ongoing improvements. This drove backlog conversion and stronger operational performance.

Taken together, momentum in our business has enabled us to raise our full year 2026 guidance, which Bill will cover later in the call. Turning to slide 4, let’s look at how we are advancing our growth strategy. We reached key regulatory milestones in the quarter on two imaging platforms with market-differentiating features. We received CE marking for Photonova Spectra, our photon-counting CT system, and StarGuide GX, our SPECT/CT system, is pending FDA clearance. This broadens our ability to commercialize in more markets. We also expanded our ultrasound platforms in cardiovascular, women’s health,
