Investing.com -- Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) barely flinched in after-hours trading, but the chipmaker just executed a massive structural play: an $8.2 billion all-stock buyout of World Labs, the spatial-intelligence powerhouse led by AI legend Dr. Fei-Fei Li.

Slated to close by the end of 2026, the deal absorbs World Labs’ San Francisco-based brain trust into AMD. The startup is at the forefront of "spatial intelligence"—developing frontier models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments from simple text, image, or video inputs. As AI rapidly expands beyond chatbots into reasoning, robotics, simulation, and physical AI, the demands on compute infrastructure are becoming vastly more diverse.

Following the close of the transaction, the World Labs team will continue advancing its AI model research, while Dr. Li will officially join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su.

“Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,” said Dr. Su. “Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise. Together, we can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power the next generation of AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem.”

For World Labs, the buyout provides the massive hardware backbone required to scale 3D world-building and robotic learning technologies.

“Advancing the next generation of AI technology requires close collaboration across model research, systems and compute,” added Dr. Li. “Joining AMD will give our team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate our research and help define the infrastructure needed for the next era of AI.”

This acquisition is a strategic offensive aimed squarely at Nvidia’s moat in robotic simulation and physical AI. By vertically integrating one of the world’s top model-research teams, AMD is advancing its strategy to deliver AI infrastructure for an open ecosystem. Spatial intelligence requires entirely different compute capabilities than traditional language models, relying heavily on physics, depth, and 3D geometry. Bringing Dr. Li’s expertise in-house gives AMD profound insight into exactly how these complex workloads are evolving, allowing them to directly shape their future technology roadmaps around the heavy computational demands of 3D world-building. Ultimately, it transforms AMD from a reactive hardware supplier into the foundational engine for the next major paradigm shift in AI.
