Moody’s upgrades TSMC rating to Aa2 on booming AI demand and market dominance

Investing.com -- Moody's Ratings upgraded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (NYSE: TSM) issuer rating to Aa2 from Aa3 on Wednesday, citing the foundry giant's dominant market share and persistent demand for artificial intelligence applications. The rating agency also raised its outlook to stable from positive while upgrading senior unsecured ratings across TSMC’s financing subsidiaries.

The credit action underscores TSMC’s expanding technological lead in advanced process nodes, alongside a fortress balance sheet that provides a substantial cushion against broader semiconductor cyclicality. Credit analysts highlight that the chipmaker's open business model and strong customer diversification continue to reinforce its operational stability through changing economic environments.

Underpinning the upgrade is robust financial momentum, evidenced by a 51% year-over-year revenue surge in the third quarter of 2026, where advanced nodes accounted for 79% of total wafer revenue. Moody's projects annual revenue growth of 30% to 45% over the next 12 to 18 months, alongside EBITDA margin expansion toward 75% as cross-node optimization offsets initial ramp costs at 2-nanometer and overseas facilities.

TSMC's credit profile remains further bolstered by an exceptionally strong liquidity buffer, holding approximately TWD 4.0 trillion in cash and marketable securities as of late September 2026. Moody's anticipates that steady free cash flow generation and low financial leverage will keep adjusted debt-to-EBITDA steady at approximately 0.3x, ensuring ample flexibility to fund ongoing global capacity expansion across the U.S., Japan, and Germany.

While near-term rating upgrades remain unlikely due to capital intensity and regional manufacturing concentration, TSMC's geographic diversification strategy and disciplined capital allocation should preserve its sovereign credit alignment and elite credit standing, said Moody's. Investors will likely keep a close eye on the cadence of overseas fabrication execution and broader macroeconomic headwinds as advanced node adoption accelerates.
